To complete this project, we worked together with the community centre, who provided us with the power-washer and the paints and materials necessary. We delegated roles to the eight people in the group, and so everyone worked together evenly towards a common goal. A couple weeks before, the community centre put out an announcement asking for the kids from the youth program to come and paint. We also contacted Save On Foods at Brooks landing and asked for donations for food and drinks; they donated quite a variety of snacks which were available on the painting day.
But before the painting could be done, the first step in renovating the mural was to clean it up and get it ready to receive the paint. The day after the clean-up, we arrived early to set up the tent, music and snacks, and all the materials. The children arrived shortly after. Everyone was very happy to contribute, and they took their role very seriously. Children who were walking by also joined for a while, as well as skateboarders, who were curious as to what we were doing and wanted to help. We received incredible positive feedback from the community; people who were walking expressed how glad they were that the mural was finally going to be completed.
To make the unfinished side really animated, we added five realistic animals to that side, and the teens were quick to add their own animals hidden in the foliage.
The weather held up, and everything went smoothly. We are thankful we were able to contribute and help the community centre, as well as connect with the teens in such a positive way. We were able to make a difference without spending anything; only our time. What a wonderful way to connect and bring people together!
